Highlights of the Past Music Year
VICTORIAN FLUTE GUILD: SENIOR FLUTE ENSEMBLE
Sunday 22 May 2016
On Sunday 22 May, the Firbank Grammar School Senior Flute Ensemble competed in the annual Victorian Flute Guild Flute Ensemble Competition, held at MLC in Kew. This is the second year the girls have been involved with this event, and Joy Wang, Cassandra Robertson, Jessica Han and Dian Liu were wonderful ambassadors for Firbank. The girls played extremely well and received an Honourable Mention in the 18 years and under Small Ensemble Section. This is particularly pleasing considering the high standard of the competition. Well done girls!
SPRING IS IN THE AIR!
Sunday 19 October
The Music Department had a busy day on Sunday 19 October! The Jazz Ensemble performed at this year's Family Life Open Garden Day in the gardens at 43 Bay Street, Brighton where they enchanted and pleased the passing crowds. Meantime, Stage Band was performing at St Andrew's Church Jazz Day and putting a tap into everyone's feet as they grooved along to the music! Both bands were well received! Well done girls!
VICTORIAN SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL: CONCERT BAND
Wednesday 20 August 2014
Firbank's Concert Band was awarded Gold Shield at the VSMF for Concert Bands on Wednesday 20 August. The Festival, held at Deakin Edge, Federation Square, provided a great performance opportunity for our young Band, consisting of girls from Years 7 - 9. They were the only ensemble in their session to be awarded Gold! This was an excellent and worthy result, following many hours of practice. Well done girls!
Thursday 19 June
Our annual Choral Concert was held in St. Andrews Church this year for the first time. Choirs from the School's three campuses entertained and thrilled a huge audience as the beautiful voices soared into the rafters. One of the highlights was the world premiere performance of 'Gifts', the piece of work commissioned by Todd McNeal for the Bel Canto Touring Choir. This performance was very warmly received in the presence of Todd McNeal, who was able to join us for the concert. As future events unfolded, this piece was instrumental in the choir's subsequent win at the Festival in Vienna!
VICTORIAN BRASS LEAGUE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Sunday 27 July a number of Firbank's brass students particpated in the VBL State Championships with some pleasing results:
In the Junior Quartet/Quintet Section, Firbank's Low Brass Quartet (Georgina Garner, Georgina Hannah, Chloe Shepherd and Charlotte Walkling) was placed first, and the Junior Quintet (Taylah Wilson, Summer Workman, Holly Jordan, Mackenzie Miller and Mia Shpherd) placed third. Chloe Shepherd placed second in the Junior Euphonium Section.
Well done girls!
VICTORIAN SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL
In June Firbank's Senior String Orchestra and combined Junior String Orchestra (from the Junior Campuses at Brighton and Sandringham) participated in the Victorian Schools Music Festival for Strings. Both orchestras were awarded Gold Shield for their performances. An excellent result and worthy of the hard work and practice leading up to this Festival.
In July the Stage Band participated in the Victorian Schools Music Festival for Jazz Bands and they were also awarded Gold Shield for their performance. Another excellent result.
Mt Gambier Jazz Festival
Stage Band and the Vocal Ensemble made the annual trek to Mt Gambier for the Generations In Jazz 2014 Festival over the weekend of 9 - 11 May. This year the weather was warmer, the accommodation was great, and we were reminded why this is such a great weekend for our students to experience! The participants were entertained by James Morrison, The Idea of North and Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band on Saturday night and attended workshops on Sunday. Everyone had a great time! Thank you to the accompanying staff members for giving up a weekend to make this experience a possibility for our students.
Music Scholars Recital
What a delightful evening of music parents and friends were treated to on Monday 5 May! Our music scholarship students proved, once again, why they are just that! It was wonderful to listen to these talented music students and appreciate the ground they have covered in the past twelve months. Congratulations to all our Music Scholars!
Junior Instrumental Program
Year 3 Strings Parent/Student Evening
This initiative introduced two years ago by our String Co-ordinator, Kim Morley, is a delightful family evening where parents are taken through the concepts of learning an instrument and the expectations of students at this year level. This year's evening on Thursday 20 March was no exception! The children were so excited to bring their parents into the "classroom" and show them what they were learning. This is always an extremely informative and enjoyable evening.
Firbank's musical year was launched on Wednesday 26 March with the annual Jazz Night. And what fun we had! Families and friends were entertained by a variety of ensembles from both the junior and senior campuses, along with a number of soloists, as they enjoyed their picnic dinners. The audience was extremely appreciative of the music presented, particularly considering some ensembles had only been together since the beginning of term. A very relaxed evening and a great way to start the year!
